The state Supreme Court will hear arguments in Evansville Courier & Press vs. Vanderburgh County Health Department, a lawsuit over public access to death certificates in Indiana. ICOG joined the effort to bring the case to the Supreme Court last year after a trial court and and Indiana appellate court panel ruled that death certificates are not public.

ICOG, the Hoosier State Press Association, and the Indiana Attorney General’s office petitioned for Supreme Court review, arguing that the lower courts ignored longstanding legal precedent establishing that death certificates should be open to the public.

The Supreme Court in January agreed to take the case and will hear oral arguments May 8 at 9 a.m.
